Master’s Application to Norway

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO HIRE A CONSULTANT THEN THIS ARTICLE IS FOR YOU!

Here I am typing away almost 8 months of crazy life!!! This article documents almost all necessary steps, process, and tasks in applying to one or more universities abroad. I would be specifically giving you information to apply to Norwegian universities in this article. Hope you’re ready for the ride, because it’s a lot of information to understand & store. I also hope this will help you turn your dream to reality.

I would first ask you to have a clear mind & positive vibes before you plan for your study. There is no litmus test to know a person’s confidence!!! So what you want is what you must crave for. If your working in a firm now, let me be candid, it’s even tougher to go through this process alone. That said you have an advantage of work experience in your application!

I would also ask you to do all these below tasks by yourself because when you finish with this it will leave you perplexed with the work you were able to do without any consultants help. Personally, I feel consultants are leeches!!! Only difference is consultants suck on your wallet instead on your skin!!!

PASSPORT is the single most important document which you will need from start to finish, so have one before you start with the process.

Skeleton view of application process:

1)     Test’s to be taken

2)     Application supporting documents to be prepared; SOP, LOR etc.

3)     University/country/field of study selection

4)     Preparation of all application documents

5)     A long wait

6)     Receive & reply to congratulation mail’s, messages, scraps & wall post’s!!! J

7)     Application for Visa/ Residence Permit

8)     Flying away!

STEP 1: Score good (as trivial as it might sound but its true, marks does matter!)

Start preparing for any of the test which you need to take. TOEFL/ IELTS for English proficiency, for other European countries GRE might also me required. GRE- if one is good at Quant than in English then you have more chances to get a good score, Vise-versa is also true. GRE takes at-least 5 months of decent preparation time. Take it as an opportunity to excel in anyone of the topic be it English or quant, it will boost you confidence & change the way you look at exams.

TOEFL is a better exam when compared to IELTS because TOEFL has very good exam structure (You will hear many different views, everything in this article is my opinion). TOEFL is a very lengthy test so practice at-least 2 full length mock tests. To get book’s for TOEFL approach any TOEFL certified center. When you book the date of exam if you book it through them they will provide you with an authentic copy of ETS TOEFL book with a CD. Practice with the CD more than reading the book. A week’s time is enough to work the CD in & out. I don’t know the process for IELTS but I am sure IELTS is cheaper option & IELTS is also accepted from majority of countries/Universities. So choosing among these two test is your personal choice.

Take your test by November or December (2nd week) at the latest. October would be an awesome month to take your test but in October there will be large number of students writing the test so booking dates for exams has to be done even more early. Registration process is simple, no worries.

STEP 2: The Backbone of your application.

During your preparation for your test’s I advise you to start off with your application documents specially the SOP (Statement of Purpose) & LOR (Letter of Recommendation). Be honest to your conscience & draft your own SOP & LOR’s if you need assistance with how to go about framing sentences, this link will surely help out. (http://www.i20fever.com/samples/). A very formal updated curriculum vitae is always important document to prepare.

Majority of universities treat SOP as the backbone of your application, so make sure you give it fair time to draft, edit & rewrite. Admission panels will have great expertise to differentiate which ones are copied & which ones are written by the applicant. Universities has sophisticated Anti-Plagiarism software’s & if your supporting documents like SOP & LOR are copied from the internet you would do more harm than good to your application. I reiterate, write your own SOP’s. Be confident & assertive but a little submissive at some places. SOP should give the list of subjects which you studied in bachelor’s, your future goal, your craving to study, your extra-curricula’s (To show that your versatile), work experience if any, what you will get from studying the course etc. Sign on the SOP before you enclose it with the application with the date & place.

LOR depends on the individual because if your recommenders will sign it for you then you can draft it by yourself. But some universities ask recommendation directly from the recommenders to them via online process, so be alert since tutors have to draft themselves. Ask your recommender to send it to the university via his/her mail ID. If you are drafting the letter then put yourself in recommender’s shoe & highlight only the good points about you & also write in which way you helped department/college in your bachelor’s. Ask your recommender to read it & let him correct if he wants to. If you have any work experience then you need to have 2 LOR’s from your bachelor tutors & 1 from your current employer/immediate boss. If you are passing out from college currently then all 3 LOR’s can be from the current tutor’s.

One heads-up in drafting LOR, Always try to get the biggest fish!!! That is either Head of department as one of the tutor recommenders or the top-most boss in your office; if you show work experience. Universities abroad take this designation lingo as one of the important parameter for evaluation. Higher the designation of the recommender better for the application. Universities see them as more authentic people than usual recommender’s.

LOR’s must be printed or xeroxed on the letter head & all signs should be made in originals. LOR should be signed by the recommender. Also remember that the LOR has to be inside a sealed envelope. The envelope should be crossed signed & sealed near the opening of the envelope cover using university/college seal.

Please use the above link to draft your SOP, LOR & CV. I suggest you to mix & match among the different formats. Make your application as unique as possible. If this if done right your ready with 3 most cardinal documents for the application even before giving your test!

STEP 3: The unknown treasure which might pleasure!!!

We all have future plans but always try to be flexible while plotting them. I say this only because we never know when we might feel that we have better options to explore. A simple way of exploring options is to start with a day to day research of universities in your interested country & field of study. Half of your time will pass with google searches! But end of the day this gives you an idea of different universities other than the one you planned for initially. I personally started of with an urge to go to USA but then this step helped me to know what really I wanted for myself. I have friends who applied to 6 countries & who got offers from all. I agree that more work is involved but you will be in a position to choose the best from the lot. All I mean is to keep a back-up plan & apply to sure-admit universities for your profile.

If you already zeroed inn on the course then mail the program coordinator & introduce yourself to him/her. This is very important cause when students show interest In the program coordinator has to reply to you & he also has to predict how many will apply for the coming intake. So once your being noticed by the coordinator, make sure you keep him informed all through your application process. This will make him recognize your application when he gets to evaluate it. It might sound puny but this is how the system works.

STEP 4: This is where the juggling starts!

You will have to travel a lot for some documents but be alert & confident. The list of documents goes as given below. Out of these leave out LOR, SOP & CV rest documents must have a notary seal & signatures. If the transcripts are sealed by the university then you can enclose the same with the application. Just bear in mind & re-check before you pack the application package that ALL DOCUMENTS MUST HAVE SOME SORT OF AUTHETHIC SIGN & SEAL.

Application Package Documents Type of Attestation

Certified Copy of Passport                                        Notary Sign & Seal

Secondary School Leaving Certificate                    In an Educational Institute envelope with seal & sign

Intermediate Certificate                                           In an Educational Institute envelope with seal & sign

Official Transcripts/

Degree Bachelors in Engineering                            In an Educational Institute envelope with seal & sign

Proof of Employment                                                Notary Sign & Seal

Certified Copy of TOEFL Score Sheet                      Notary Sign & seal

Certified Copy of GRE Score Sheet                          Notary Sign & seal

Finally, A long wait awaits you!!! Yes you will have constant dreams & nightmares both together! But in the end it will be worth it. Once you get your Offer always remember which ever country you going to apply for visa make sure you have all your required documents for Visa. In case you need to take care of some financial aspect its always good to plan for your bank account statement & have a word with the bank manager for educational loan. So that once your offer letter comes you can soon get bank statement & plan for your Visa interview dates. Accommodation in some countries are very difficult to book so be aware of accommodation process before you get your offer.

MASTER’S APPLICANTS TO NORWAY

Ok, this is where I start concentrating more on Norwegian universities. I had applied to 5 universities in total so; I can give detailed Information on each of those universities. The application process would be similar to many universities other than the 5 mentioned by me. Please check the university website for any changes or for any new course to which you can apply. Norway offers free higher education & since the international intake is not more than 10-12 students/course, getting a seat in Norwegian University is comparatively more challenging than US, Canada or any other country. So take the process of preparing documents very seriously. The best website to find your field of study is http://www.studyinnorway.no/ . In this site you will find very clear cut authentic information. The visa application to Norway is given below in detail & it’s common to all student applicants. Majority of Norwegian universities have intakes only during autumn term specially technology master’s programs. For programs in spring please go through the above site.

1) NTNU- Norwegian University of Science & Technology (http://www.ntnu.edu/)

World Ranking # 49, Europe Ranking # 4 (JAN 2010)

NTNU is a very prestigious university in Norway/Europe. Hence, opportunities for both research & work post your studies are immense. Please check for the course you’re interested in & go through the requirements to apply to that particular course. There are about 30 Master’s program taught in English as per this year (2010). Almost 1200 students out of 20000 are International students. It’s the biggest student city in Norway so compared to all other university areas in Norway this would be a cheaper bargain on living expense! It also has the world’s largest student festival. The fact that one out of every six people is a student makes Trondheim a young and vibrant city. On average, 2250 professional, master´s-level or doctoral degrees are awarded each year.

Application process followed at NTNU for master’s program:

Any international master’s applicant has to go through two rounds of selection. 1st round or as the university calls Preliminary Round takes place from November 1st to November 30th for next autumn intake. Make sure you don’t miss this preliminary round because only students who are screened & cleared in this round are sent the final application form through e-mail.  Preliminary application form can be accessed through the master’s portal in the website. Preliminary application is a very simple form to fill, its self explanatory and you would find it easy to fill. TOEFL marks if available can be mentioned, if you’re taking up the test later in November or December, then you will be asked to give the date of the test. (TOEFL/IELTS exams results need not be known during preliminary application) But beware you will have to be very careful with the details given in the preliminary form. Please note that they do not require any documentation at this point of time. If you are qualified further, you will receive more instructions concerning necessary documentation for final application form.

Upon being selected through preliminary round, you can expect your final application form via e-mail by 3rd week of December. In it you will find a unique applicant number this is your ID for now. All your quires to the university should have this ID mentioned. During the final application you will have to send the TOEFL score Sheet via ETS to NTNU with their ETS code & address. Usually deadline to send ETS TOEFL Score sheets are March 1st. It’s advisable to send the ETS TOEFL online order by January end. The ETS code for NTNU will be mentioned in your final application form.

Note: Preliminary round is mandatory for both Quota & Self funding applicants. There are different forms for both Quota & self Funding applicants, so make sure you fill the right preliminary form.

There is however another way you can apply, that’s by opting for a Erasmus Mundus Course. Only Master’s program which is funded by Erasmus mundus can be applied to.

So totally there are 3 ways of applying, I have explained them in simple way

1) Quota Applicant    2) Erasmus Mundus Applicant      3) Self Funding Applicants

1)     Quota applicants are applicants from those universities with which NTNU has collaboration worldwide. It is a very competitive & less number of students get through this process. For Example India’s IIT or IISC has collaboration with NTNU so students who have passed through such institutes can apply as quota applicant. In this the student will be sanctioned the amount of 90000 NOK per year as living expenses. So Quota applicants don’t have to spend any of their money!

Check with your university if it has collaboration with NTNU. http://www.ntnu.no/studies/financingandscholarships/is_quota_scheme/admission

2)     Erasmus Mundus Applicant: Applicants to this have to have very good academic score in all of their educational years. It is the most famous funding given in Europe for higher education. Not all university offer Erasmus Mundus Course. But NTNU does offer some courses under this. Project Management is one of the popular ones. Check the Erasmus mundus website to get more information on applying.

http://ec.europa.eu/education/external-relation-programmes/doc72_en.htm

3)     Self Funding Applicants: These applicants have to show NOK 90000 as a proof that they can sustain & live in Norway for a year with their personal savings (NOK 180000 for two years as per immigrations office-UDI). This is a mandatory regulation put up by UDI- Norway Immigration Department. Comparatively, there are more self funding students than the other two types of applicants. So, chances of making to the program also increase. Make sure you start planning for that NOK 90000 once you finish applying, just to be tension free at end of May when you get your offers. NOK 90000 is calculated as per Norwegian standard of living which is rated as the No. 1 in the world by UN, the applicant may not necessarily spend 90000 NOK per year; it might be lesser depending on his/ her living standards. But as per Immigration you have to show NOK 90000 as proof.

Fill the final application form & send it through a courier network which provides you with tracking facility DHL University express is the most reliable & prompt among all. FED-ex also would be a good choice. The deadline usually is February 1st.  Please do check for any changes of deadlines in the website.

The final application package must contain the following documents: FOR SELF FUNDING STUDENTS ONLY

Application Document Type of Attestation

1) Certified Copy of Passport                                        Notary Sign & Seal

2) Secondary School Leaving Certificate                    In an Educational Institute envelope with seal & sign

3) Intermediate Certificate                                           In an Educational Institute envelope with seal & sign

4) Official Transcripts/

Degree Bachelors in Engineering                            In an Educational Institute envelope with seal & sign

5) Statement of Purpose/Motivation                         ONLY applicants Sign & Date

6) Letter of Recommendations- (3 in total)               In an envelope with seal & sign of college/company

7) Documentation of Financing                                    Notary Sign & seal

8 Updated Curriculum Vitae                                        ONLY applicants Sign & Date

9) Proof of Employment                                                Notary Sign & Seal

10) Certified Copy of TOEFL Score Sheet                    Notary Sign & seal

Note: Check if you have any other document relevant to your application. For example if you are a Quota or Erasumus mundus applicant you may have additional documents to enclose into the package. Also make sure you enclose proof of name change in your past if any & marriage certificate if you’re married. All this are important both for the university & to the Immigrations department of Norway (UDI)

The 7th document ie: Documentation of Financing is the most important for Self Funding applicants. Below is the format which I used. Bank managers usually do not give this, if you know the manager personally he will oblige. If possible take a print out of this content in the bank letter-head, nothing better than that. The account need not be in your name, your parents or relatives also can help you with this certificate. All university wants is a preliminary proof that you have 90000 NOK/more in your respective countries currency. The main financial transaction would take place post your admission, which is later discussed in the VISA application details.

Documentation of Financing Letter Format

This certificate is issued at the specific request of Mr. XXXXX (your/ father/mother/guardian name).

Final application deadlines:

Usually the application deadline for top universities in Norway (NTNU, Oslo, Stavanger etc) is February 1st. You should have all the above documents ready by January 2nd week. Universities in Norway considered your postmark date & not the date it reaches them. So, say worst case scenario, if you send the package by 27th Jan from your country & it reaches universities on 3rd of FEB the application deadline is met & your application will be treated as usual & not as late applicant. But to be sure, never try this! Policies can be changed anyday!!! Send the package as early as possible, once you’re done. Once you send your package always remember to inform the contact person about the docket number of courier & also make sure once it reaches him/her you have a letter of confirmation that they have received your application. Waiting 4 months for result without confirmation of documents received would be nothing but fatuous! I got my result of application on 11/05/2010; Accepted.

2) UIS- University of Stavanger ( http://www.uis.no/frontpage)

World Ranking # 1536, (JAN 2010)

( * ) to give the selection committee better idea of your analytical & technical writing skills. DO NOT SEND THIS TO NTNU or UIS since top universities do not like documents which were not asked for in the first place. Since Molde is a lesser ranked university you can take this liberty to impress them with your GRE score sheet! (If you have appeared for GRE)

Note: Check if you have any other document relevant to your application. For example if you are a quota applicant you may have additional documents to enclose into the package. Also make sure you enclose proof of name change in your past if any & marriage certificate if you’re married. All this are important both for the university & to the Immigrations department of Norway (UDI)

The 7th document ie: Documentation of Financing is the most important for Self Funding applicants. Below is the format which I used. Managers usually do not give this, if you know the manager personally he will oblige.

Final application deadlines:

Usually the application deadline for Molde University is 1st March. You should have all the above documents ready by February 2nd week. Universities in Norway considered your postmark date & not the date it reaches them. So, say worst case scenario, if you send the package by 27th February from your country & it reaches universities on 3rd of March the application deadline is met & your application will be treated as usual & not as late applicant. But to be sure, never try this! Policies can be changed anyday!!! Send the package as early as possible, once you’re done. Once you send your package always remember to inform the contact person about the docket number of courier & also make sure once it reaches him/her you have a letter of confirmation that they have received your application. Waiting 3 months for result without confirmation of documents received would be nothing but fatuous!

Results of application to Molde University are usually during first/second week of May.  I got mine on 10/05/2010; Accepted.

4. Aalesund University College (http://www.hials.no/eng)

World Ranking # 4576, (JAN 2010)

It might be lesser know & lesser ranked university but that certainly does not take away its success in the field of ship design & product & system design. Aalesund University College is one among the 7 specialized universities in Norway. Since the location of university is near to the harbor there are lots of industrial exposures to this master’s program. A certain senior also told me that job opportunities in marine companies are plenty around Aalesund.

A word of caution if your applying to this university, they operate closely with their partners (consultants). When I applied I did not know that we need to go through their partner in my home country. If your country has a partner of Aalesund University then make sure you send your application via the partner. The university is very biased to applicants applying directly to their university. They have an obligation to those applicants from their partners to be given more importance. (This was a turn off to me & one of my friend, my friend was proficient in five designing software’s, but he too was rejected as me. We both had applied directly later we came to know that 7 people from my country were selected who had applied through Aalesund Partner in here. Living expenses in Aalesund is higher than other towns, mentioned by in this article.

You can find their partners in the link below.

Application process followed at Aalesund University for master’s program:

The application process is simpler than that of NTNU, UI Stavanger or Molde! There is only one application 2 page form to fill & the supporting documents to be sent with the application form in a package. The application form is available in the university website. Make sure the application form is for the current year of admissions. It is a simple form to fill & self explanatory. Since there is no TOEFL score report address to Aalesund University you can send them a Notarized copy of your TOEFL score sheet. (If applicable)

There is only one way of applying to Aalesund University.

1) Self Funding Applicants

Self Funding Applicants: These applicants have to show NOK 90000 as a proof that they can sustain & live in Norway for a year with their personal savings (NOK 180000 for two years as per immigrations office-UDI). This is a mandatory regulation put up by UDI- Norway Immigration Department. Comparatively, there are more self funding students than the other two type of applicants.

Fill the application form & send it through a courier network which provides you with tracking facility DHL University express is the most reliable & prompt among all. FED-ex also would be a good choice. The deadline usually is March 1st.  Please do check for any changes of deadlines in the website.

The final application package must contain the following documents: FOR SELF FUNDING STUDENTS ONLY

5) Telemark university college (http://www.hit.no/eng/)

World Ranking # 1381, (JAN 2010)

Telemark has the largest number of foreign exchange students in Norway. It has four faculties in total. Technology is not the biggest out of these four though. I did not have much information about the university since it was my last priority. Please do some self research about the university. Process Technology Course is always in demand since Norway is oil rich country.

To know more please visit the below facebook/ twitter pages. Self help is the best help!

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1289701401#!/pages/Hogskolen-i-Telemark/114779855203964?ref=search

Application process followed at Telemark University for master’s program:

The application process is very strict & they demand applicants to hand over perfectly filled documents to them. There is only one application 3 page form to fill & the supporting documents to be sent with the application form in a package. The application form is available in the university website. Make sure the application form is for the current year of admissions. It is a simple form to fill & self explanatory. Since there is no TOEFL score report address to Telemark University you can send them a Notarized copy of your TOEFL score sheet (If applicable). You will get 3 priorities, & as per your preference you should fill the program interested. I had applied to a master’s program which did not coincide with my Bachelor courses hence wasting my whole application. So make sure you apply to a course which you had some exposure in your bachelor. They have guideless to application package please follow as they say.

There are 2 ways of applying to Telemark University.

1) Quota Applicant    2) Self Funding Applicants

1)     Quota applicants are applicants from those universities with which Telemark University has collaboration. It is a very competitive & less number of students get through this process. For Example India’s IIT or IISC has collaboration with Telemark University so students who have passed through such institutes can apply as quota applicant. In this the student will be sanctioned the amount of 90000 NOK per year as living expenses. So Quota applicants don’t have to spend any of their money!

Check with your university if it has collaboration with Telemark University.

2)     Self Funding Applicants: These applicants have to show NOK 90000 as a proof that they can sustain & live in Norway for a year with their personal savings (NOK 180000 for two years as per immigrations office-UDI). STUDENT RESIDENCE PERMIT

http://www.udi.no/Norwegian-Directorate-of-Immigration/

Once you have your offer, then starts the cardinal issue of funds transfer (for self funding students). This is going to be easy if you have planned for finances during those result waiting months. First ill make this process transparent to you.

In Norway a person can’t open a bank account until he has a Unique Norwegian ID number. Now as per UDI the immigrations office a student has to show funds of NOK 90000 (which might change year to year) in a Norwegian Bank. So what universities do is they have an account in the name of student council & the funds should be transferred to this account from the student. When you transfer the funds you can transfer them in EURO’s or Krones as you wish. Be very alert to get the best deal of exchange rates & be very careful with account number/account name details. Once you transfer the money your bank in your home country will give you a receipt called the debit slip. The university will reply with the credit receipt of their account. These two receipts of transfers are what you need to enclose with the visa application.

The university has no authorization to deal with this amount transferred; as in, it cannot use it for any purpose nor will it get any interest on this amount during this period. This is a very safe & authentic process. Student has to be sure is he transfers to the right account number, that’s all!!! Once you reach Norway, you are given the visa after verification by the police & will be getting a unique ID number of Norway within 2 months of entry. Once you get this Unique Norwegian ID number you can open an account in any Norwegian bank & ask the university to transfer your amount from university account to your new bank account in Norway. If, attractive deposit Interest rates prevail in your home country!!! You can also send the money back to your home country.

Usually Norwegian Embassy in India does not have a process of “Visa Interview” as such. But, it’s always advised to be prepared for one if they change their process. Students are asked to submit the documents with the required processing fee (subject to change every year). (NEPAL consulates do have a visa interview) So please check with either the seniors in Norway from your country or call the consulate in your area.
Norwegian consulates are very informal but that does not mean their unprofessional! So be on time if you have been given a prior appointment. I submitted mine on 27/05/2010 in Chennai consulate.

Accommodation; For Residence permit application

As per my know-how of Norwegian universities, all universities in Norway do provide accommodation it might be either through student services or by their own housing colonies. This holds true for both bachelor’s or masters studies. Since accommodation is the most expensive parameter in Norwegian household, it’s always a good idea to stick with university accommodation because you won’t find a cheaper deal than what your university housing offers around that area! But, Research students (PhD) have to search for accommodation by their own, since they are under the payroll of the university.

Rooms are booked under your name once you send the confirmation of joining the university. In some universities like NTNU for example, Student service (SiT) will ask you to transfer the safety deposit & sign the housing contract from your home country. So be prepared with at-least 5000 to 8000 NOK within second week of June & transfer them as mentioned in the housing contract. Follow the same steps as the earlier transfer of funds & get the receipts from both student service and your bank. This will be your confirmation of housing. The process might differ with different university. Another example would be of University of Stavanger in which you have to register for housing before the deadline given in their page. “Majority of universities guarantee housing for international students, just follow the process laid down by the university”

The offer letter given in Norwegian will be your accommodation surety in Norway, so this is what you will have to enclose in your RP application. You will receive this letter within your offer letter. Since offer letters are received from April to May, it’s always wise you apply early to RP. The process usually takes 2 months to finish & to get your passport stamped.

The main reason we drafted this document is to guide future applicants to Norway. We had hardly 1 or 2 seniors in these universities & we don’t want future applicants to hunt for information like we didJ. Call yourself ‘lucky’ to have this! If you have doubts during the application process, you can mail us your queries we will reply to you depending on our other commitments. Please be clear & concise in your mails. We will try to help you as much as we can.

We can’t help you with quires on job scenarios after master’s because we believe we are going there to study & if we do that properly we can get jobs anywhere we want! Once you have accepted an offer you can contact us for further information on travel plans, university atmosphere, everyday life and so. We request, please don’t direct mails to all contacts at once. If you’re really interested we can give you our phone numbers & skype ID via a reply mail.

If you find any grammatical or spelling mistakes above, Cut me some Slack 😛 its not easy to draft such an article alone 😛 All the above process is what we experienced, your process may not be the same, so make decisions wisely. You don’t have to agree with the rankings or any other aspect here it’s just our take on the application process. Everyone has their own opinion! We are just trying to guide you that’s all.

I hope all these information will help you draft a great application. Wish you make it to your dream university. During the process do help out to other applicants, who need information. The feeling of sharing is always satisfyingJ.  Wish you all the best for the process. \m/. If you want it, you get it J I would end with two of my favorite quotes.

“Sharing Is Caring”

“I Am Too Positive To Be Doubtful, Too Optimistic To Be Fearful, And Too Determined To Be Defeated”

First of all, this was the only site which i found to be practical and truly helpful regarding applications to norway.. Thank you so much for that!
I have applied to university of Stavanger (offshore tech).. I have cleared the screening process and submitted the documents and am awaiting final result.. I was hoping if you could give the email id of Pavan Kumar (who, it is mentioned, is also at UiS studying the same course). I had some queries and it would be really helpful if you could give some contact info..
    Thanks a lot again!!

    • I know how important this article is to Applicants to Norway.I hope it helped you. Anyway, leave me a message for any queries and contacts, I would not like to reply with thier mail Ids they would not appreciate that.
      Good Luck.

hello please can you help me in my motivation letter for NTNU. I would highly appreciate your help because it is my final chance

    • sujith mohandas says:

hey jeevith, i m sujith ,interested into apply into NTNU’S MSc Programme Industrial Ecology. i would like to know what the acceptance rate for this course(if u have an idea that is). also my undergrad B.E mech percentage 65% , but from a reputed college BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ,Mesra , Ranchi? do you think that i stand a chance to get admitted if i have a good SOP and LOR . also if i am to apply for 2 different courses at NTNU will that be 2 different applications ? i m asking this with regard to toefl scores being sent to the college , since you can send 5 scores for free. also let me know if u know anything about applying to finland and denmark too. thanks

      • Last year there were 4 Indians who got into Industrial Ecology. So the intake this year may be the same too not sure cause students come in during August. As per my course the professor chose students based on total marks, thats sad cause Chinese degree holders have their percentages near to 90, whereas in Indian a 70% is a good score in BE. That said, acceptance criteria might be different based on different departments and individuals assessing the applications. I agree that Birla is one among the best, but sadly this above thing is a kind of a possibility. If you have excellent extra and co curricular activities in your resume that will be regarded as a positive too. Norwegians love honesty, draft your own SOP without any ones thoughts in it.

I dont think you can apply 2 programs. You will only have one application in which you can opt for 2 priorities. Finland and Denmark I dont think its ethical right for me to talk about I have no experience about the application process, and don’t want to give wrong information either. I hope you find some other forums to discuss about applications there.

hey jeevith, thanks for the prompt reply .. i have another query .its about the attestation of the documents and the coresponding envelopes . the attestation(seal and sign) for the btech degree and 10 and 12 th cerficates have to be done by whom? also i did my higher schooling in the gulf and dont live there anymore, so what do i do about that? if u wouldnt mind you could put up a post of the things u had in your check lists and plans(study and financial and the like) to get an idea how to go about drafting them.it will be very helpful to all us norway aspirants…thanks in advance

      • First I suggest you read the article properly, one of the things I hate doing is waste my time repeating things which are already mentioned in the article. Self help is the best help Sujith. Both document attestation and financial document draft are in the article. As cocky I might sound to you, its a reality that at end of the day its your effort not my replies which will get you the admits and I am sure you agree on that. It was ironical to read a query on attention to detail while the reader himself did not do it while reading the article! Don’t take it personal, people pointing your flaws are very few in this world.
        Good day.

      • sujith says:

hey jeevith one more query.. any word limits for the SOP

      • Udupiboy says:

I did not have any limits, but made sure its 2 pages at the max with 11 size font.

Thanks. It helped me in the sense, that this was the only first hand info I got about UiS on the entire web. And I just wanted to get in touch with someone who is already there. Anyways, I understand their privacy, and will ask you for their info only after I get admitted (if).
The thing is, I stumbled upon your blog after I had submitted my application. And the only concern I have is that I haven’t submitted the Document of financing (I thought it would be required after I secured admission their). And as I am applying as self-financed student, I am really worried how important that document might be. After reading your blog, I asked the program co-ordinator of UiS, if it was ok if I submitted the document then (after the deadline). I haven’t got any reply from him.. I know I can’t do anything about it now… But there’s still 1 n a half month left for the result.. and this issue has been eating at me for some time now..
As for scores, I have +75% in Engg. (civil) and have got 116 in TOEFL.. I really hope they allow me to submit the document later..
What do you think!? Please reply…

  5. Rohit: I have mailed you the reply.

  6. Narayanan.J says:

Hi bro…This was the only useful site with some practical info about studying in Norway, first of all thank you for that…I have a doubt, Do banks give education loans for the cost of living … If we apply as a self-funding student and get admitted will the University provide me with any estimation certificate of the cost of living per yr/per month like that …I need to show these kind of documents for getting bank loan…Please clarify my doubt…Thanks in advance…

    • Please go through the post again, to get your answer on “Do banks give education loans for the cost of living” it is in the financial document format. The university will not give any kind of estimation on living expenses. You can look at the UDI site (Norway Immigration) you will find the process and the cost of living per year according to their standards this is the only way for you to convince your banker for a loan. If you know the manager personally this process could be do able.

  7. Sreedhar says:

    Hi Guys,

You have written a great article on the admission process. It has been very helpful for me during the application process.
I have a query regarding the admission letter. The letter which I received as attachment via email does not contain any NTNU sign and seal. So should I wait for the hard copy of letter before submitting documents for Visa.

I have notarized all the copies of documents that I plan submit at the consulate. Is legalization of documents needed ?

    Thanks
    Sreedhar

    • We used the NTNU mail attachment for visa process. I guess its a better decisions to do call up Chennai embassy and ask them about it. They will guide you on this cause we never know if anything has changed.

      • Tehpoe says:

        Hey!

It is very good of you to share your ideas, thanks!

I get admission at this University, and I have one question:

On the topic of documents to be enclosed, you mentioned to submit 3 copies of offer letter (all pages), 3 more copies of Norwegian offer letter (this is because they will treat this as our accommodation proof).

It is correct, they send me an offer letter as an attachment, but they didn’t send me the Norwegian offer letter (only english one).

In addition, I didn’t receive the regular letter that was send through the post office.

So did you receive the Norwegian offer letter via your mail, prior to your application?

      • Udupiboy says:

They might have changed the contents in the offer letter. So the offer letter must have mentioned the housing too in it. The procedure in your country for the visa may be different than of mine. So it is better to contact the embassy and ask them once what documents they need.
The offer letter takes a lot of time to reach you via normal post mail. So you can use the copy sent by them from email for visa process.
        Goodluck with it.

  8. ADITYA SARASWAT says:

Nice Blog Jeevith….. It surely has helped me a lot. Bye the means of job scenario for international students, I wanted to know that whether there will be any problems in getting placements in Norway. Because, I was at US few days back, they are playing on some sort of policy on selecting the US natives before the international people.

    • Udupiboy says:

But Aditya thats just a nations future plan to structure its human resource, the same thing goes on in India. My argument is whatever policies are introduced the best ones in their study field will make sure to have good opportunities of work for them. Sorry to be so strong with my opinion but this is how I think, no fun pointing finger towards policy makers. “If you want it, you get it” 😉

  9. Nitesh says:

Wow that is some information…thank you Jeevith !!!
I would have taken ages to assemble this much stuff..:D
My question to Jeevith is regarding the admission criteria..i applied for the Masters in Computer science and Off-shore technology at the UiS this year….but unfortunately couldn’t clear the Cut-off by mere ‘.7’ percent. My academics are as follows :
    10th – 85.2% , 12th – 80.6% , B.Tech(C.S) – 66.3% and Toefl – 95
I believe that having a single cut-Off for everyone irrespective of their streams is a little unjust,so m planning on writing a request letter to the university(Also known as the complaint procedure).
1)So my query is, will this be helpful ?? i mean, has the university ever altered it’s decision on the basis of a request.
2)My second question is regarding another university(UiA-University of Agder)..are the programs offered by this university good?? and what are my chances of getting into their ICT program.
    Or
I should wait for another year and then apply to a larger number of Programs, coz this year i didn’t apply anywhere else 😦

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hi Nitesh,

      1) I do not know what to suggest, UIS, NTNU, UIO, UIT will only look at merit. If your not making the cut off its just their requirement. Sure you can lodge a complaint, but I am not sure what decisions take place internally in the departments.

      2) It depends on what you want, a top university or a medium level university. Universities in Norway all have same level of standard of teaching but vary in their international collaborations. As you can see, I applied to many university with varied rankings so it depends on you and your wish.

It may be a good idea to apply to other universities but make sure you contact the professors in charge it is very important to know the content of your masters course. If I was in your position, I would rather wait for a good university, but in your case if you still do not make the cut off next year, I dont think you should think about such universities and would suggest applying to other universities this year itself. Again, its my opinion your the one who decides for yourself.

Good to know the post helped you,

      Good luck.

  10. mehul vora says:

Hey can i know your detailed profile so that i can calculate probability of getting in.

    • Udupiboy says:

Sorry, I would not like to do that. Profiles are always individualistic so comparing them is never a good idea. Rather, I suggest you be confident with your profile. Good things will happen with that attitude.
      Good luck. 🙂

      • mehul vora says:

No problem… i was just wondering dat since you got selected in NTNU and UIS the best in norway but got rejection from Telemark though it does not stand in line with the above two. By profile i wanted to know dat from which branch you have completed Bachelor in engineering since in Telemark they require some credits in Chemistry and Thermodynamics which could be the reason for your rejection, perhaps dey prefer Chemical Engineering. Any ways your post was really very helpful I have also applied for the coming term in all four colleges for 2012-13 u have applied just found replacement for Aalesund University College by Norwegian University of Life Sciences. I am waiting for outcome of my application. I vl contact you if i am getting acceptance from any of them.

        Thanks
        Mehul

      • Udupiboy says:

My bachelors was in Industrial Engineering and for Telemark University they needed people from process engineering-Chemical so I was rejected. In hindsight, it was good after all. I am happy that the post helped you. 5 universities application will serve you well by giving you choices to make. I wish you get what you want.

  11. mehul vora says:

Hey, I have got an acceptance from Telemark for Masters in Process Technology. I have also applied for NTNU and UIS the outcome of which is still pending kindly guide me whether Process Technology is advisable since i have to confirm my acceptance. I was having a doubt regarding Financial Plan form, what details i need to furnish in financial plan form. also do i require to show 2*92500 for RP and Visa application?

    • Udupiboy says:

Congratulations on the offer. If you are confident about NTNU and UIS and if you have any other university applications, then in my opinion it might be wise to wait. Mind you its my opinion so end if the day you are your own boss. Telemark is good but NTNU and UIS are way better.
You will be asked to transfer 90000 NOK to any of these universities. No exceptions. I.e 90000 NOK is for one year. I suggest you read the last part of the post, you will know more about the process.

      • mehul vora says:

I have gone through your post but i am having doubt only regarding financial plan form i mean i am not getting what i need to enclose with that form? Also I am Chemical Engineer having 18 months of experience in Essar Refinery and 61% Agg can you by any means be able to calculate probability from NTNU. I have applied for MS in Petroleum Engineering. I am asking coz i have to confirm my acceptance before 25 April.

  12. mehul vora says:

Can you mail me the details about financial plan form also can i get your email-id to contact in case of emergency.

  13. million says:

Hello, can you please send me your email address, so that I can ask you something about NTNU; thanks for your help in return!

  14. Faheem Ali says:

    Hi Jeevith,

Your articles have been of great help during my application to Universities in Norway. Incidentally, I have been offered admission in NTNU for the Master’s Programme in Project Management, starting August 2013. It would be of great help if you could brief me on the following:

    1. I have already send the scanned copy of Acknowledgement form, accepting the offer via email. Will it suffice or should I send the hardcopy via regular post?
    2. When do I need to transfer the money, do I need to wait for any confirmation from them after the above mentioned procedure?
    3. Since I would be travelling from Kerala, India can you provide me with any particular advice before leaving, and an economical travel plan.
4.When are we likely to know about the exact date of arrival at Trondheim.

    Regards,
    Faheem Ali

    • Udupiboy says:

      1. I suggest you send a hard copy too. I do not remember what I did, it was 3 years ago. Sorry. But I think I did whatever the offer said to every single last detail. So just check what they mention on the offer letter. If they say they need a hard copy, then you know you have no other option but to send one.

      2. The money you send is an confirmation that you have accepted the offer too. So it is a two way process, if you send the acknowledgment form its just your word on paper, but once your send the money then NTNU knows that your decision is frozen.

      3. Apply for visa by the end of May, to have a buffer time between your visa approval and flight dates. I booked my tickets only after I got my visa, but it depends on you when you want to book tickets.

      4. You will receive your Entry Visa by end of 2nd week in July i.e if you apply by the end of May. People at Chennai consulate very nice and friendly not like Mumbai or Kolkatta. So I dont think that would be a problem. You will be required to be present in Trondheim around 11-14 August and orientation starts week 33 100%.

    • Udupiboy says:

By the way, Congratulations! “Project Management” is not an easy admit so you should feel great about that. The department is a hybrid of two influential departments in NTNU hence the evaluation process is quite a tough one. Also, you will have the liberty to choose your courses to your liking and expertise. Glad to see that this post has helped you along.

      Good luck!

      • Faheem Ali says:

Could you please mail me your email id…I have got some doubts on the visa application process.

        regards,
        Faheem Ali

      • Udupiboy says:

I suggest you write your queries here, that way others who have the same doubt can look through for some guidance.

@ Jeevith, you are really doing a nice job. Keep it up!

I have a question to ask you concerning getting admission in Norway universities like NTNU; UIS, UIO, uni of bergen etc.

I am currently in my final year. My course is Geology. And by God’s grace i will graduate with a G.p of about 75%. (second class upper as refferd in my country, NIGERIA)

I would like to for courses like Msc in GEOPHYSICS, PETROLEUM GEOSCIENCE ENGINEERING, PETROLEUM ENGINEERING,

please i want to know how possible is it to for A NIGERIAN STUDENT to get admission in any of the university with CGPA (Bsc grade point) of 75% in Geology.

Thanks, i am looking forward to hearing from you

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Augustine,

I am not certain about the selection process in different departments.I think it is not fair for me to comment anything about the selection process. But I am sure if your university in Nigeria has collaborations with Norwegian universities, your application can be given preference.

      Good luck to you.

    Hi Jeevith:
You got a nice name! Thanks for your very detail article on Norway.
I am from Bangladesh and have just discovered your blog while I was searching net. Please get to know that I got an offer in Business course Masters Program from Aalesund. I have already transferred 95000 NOK. Moreover two weeks back, I applied for Residence Permit. Could you please highlight on the probability of getting Student Visa.
Thanks again! Looking forward to your kind reply.

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Nurul,

Congratulations! Ålesund is a very beautiful place too.
It took me about 1.5 months to receive my entry visa. I applied on the 28th May 2010 and got my entry visa stamped by the 17th of July 2010. However, visa processing times differ from country to country. So, I suggest you follow up with your closest Norwegian embassy after one month of your submission.
It is really nice to see that the post has helped you.

      Goodluck!!!

      • Nurul Hasan says:

        Hi Jeevith:
One more thing, do you have any writing on those students who take their spouse in Norway? Or you got any clue on that, please advise.
        Take care
        – Hasan

      • Udupiboy says:

        Hi again,

I have not come across anyone who has a student visa and is living with a spouse. But I do recommend you check UDI reunification page. There might be some provisions for such applications. I had some friends who had their partner either working or studying in Norway. So if your spouse can find a job or a full time study it may be easier to move together.

  17. Augustine says:

Jeevit. i will apply for my Msc in 2015. There is one secret thing i want to do to help me stand a better chance of getting admission iN NTNU, university of stavanger or university of Bergen.

I will write that i have 1 year working experience in one of the petroleum industry in my country. And have my paper well stamped and signed by the industry.

Please do you know if i they will actually go to my country to verify from the industry?

I want to be certain from those ahead of me so that i will not make any mistake. thanx. Looking forward to hearing from you

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Augustine,

I kindly request you not do fake any work experience. Morally and ethically that is not right. Moreover, your application is assessed both by university and Norwegian Embassy (In the later stage) and it is not recommended to have any discrepancies in your application. It is a risk which you can do without.

If your goal is to improve your profile, I suggest you work on research projects in your current study and try to publish one or more papers in a research journal. Being able to write scientific research papers is regarded higher than having a puny amount of work experience. I do understand your position but I again advise you to give some thought to the alternatives. There are many good things you can do, to have a better profile. You reminded me of a quote “There is a easy way and there is a right way”

Be honest and confident within, you will get whatever you wish for. 🙂

      Goodluck.

Hello jeevith … Its a very useful blog…. I have been selected for Msc Petroleum engineering ( Specialization – Reservoir engineering) course at UIS for 2013 admissions . Currently I have joined ONGC – drilling department in india and i completed my graduation in Petroleum engineering in 2012 from PDPU, India…. I am very much interested in studying reservoir engineering in norway but i m not sure about the job prospects in norway for my field after completing the course…. It wud be really great if you give me some idea about the job scenario up there….

    Thanks and regards
    Varun Bhalla

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Varun,

Congratulations, UIS is a very good university to study petroleum engineering. UIS is a young but very influential university in Norway adding to it Stavanger is the power capital of Europe (Oil & Gas hub of Europe). As I tell most of applicants, it is upon you to convert the opportunities you get while you study. And landing a job anywhere is a individualistic experience. That said, prospects with a Masters in Petroleum Engineering are very good in Norway and especially in Stavanger. Trust me on this, if you are confident and believe in your line of study, you will do just great.

As I understand, you must have already past the reply date to UIS because the classes for 2013 starts soon in August. I hope you have already submitted your visa application.

I wish you goodluck, and have a great time in Stavanger.

      • Please upload all your previous studies, they may be a positive in the application. Don’t hide anything that’s not fair for you or for NTNU. Don’t build anything on a lie. I wish you good luck with your application. For statement of purpose, I have a link to templates which you can refer in the post. Hope it helps. Cheers

  19. Nurul Hasan says:

    Hi again:

You know I am from Bangladesh. Here Norwegian Embassy doesn’t handle visa related procedure. Instead Sweden Embassy deals with it. However they also send Bangladesh Passports, who got Residence Permit approval from UDI, to Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi. Meanwhile one of my friends has already sent his Passport to India on 27 June.

Now do you have any idea, after receiving the Passport, how long New Delhi might take to complete attaching D-Visa?

    Thanks for your help.

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hi Nurul,

If you or your friend has sent the passport to get entry visa sealed on the passport, it should not take long. Norwegian embassies are quiet quick at it. If you already have got the visa approval and are only waiting for the issue sealed on the passport then you dont have to worry since it is still early July.

I remember I got my approval on the 17th July and travelled to the embassy and they issued (sealed) on the by the 23rd July.

Hopefully you will get it on time. Goodluck.

  20. Nurul Hasan says:

    Hi Jeevith:
    Thanks for your kind reply.
During that time, did you get any mail from UDI regarding approval?
In Dhaka, Sweden Embassy just telephone the applicant, saying “Norwegian Residence Permit decision has come, bring your passport, we will have to send it to New Delhi. When they will return the Passport, we don’t know”
You know its not comfortable to live in uncertainty 😦
    Take care!

  21. Nurul Hasan says:

Oh! One more thing, after getting UDI approval, do New Delhi Norwegian Embassy change approval decision at time?

    • Udupiboy says:

Some things are meant to be uncertain until it manifests. I did get a call from the Norwegian Embassy telling me I have to submit my passport for visa stamping.

You have done your part, leave the rest to god or your luck. And I do not know if they can differ from the decision. I would say, paitence is the key here. 🙂

      • Nurul Hasan says:

        Hi Jeevith:
Thanks so far for all the help you provided. Finally got my D-Visa, with cap to enter into Aalesund within 13 August.
Please help me by notifying one more info. Do I have to report to local Police Station, within 13 August or I am allowed to enter into Norway within that stipulated time and apply for Residence Permit afterwards within one week of my entry?
Actually we will have biggest national festival coming on 9 August. I want to spend that time with my family and then would like to take off from Bangladesh on 11 August. In that case, I shall reach on 12 August inshAllah. Need your kind suggestion in this regard.
        Thanks again.

      • Udupiboy says:

        Hi Nurul,

Congratulations! I know it is a good feeling.

During my travel, I had the entry visa up until 30th of August. 13th August seems to be a new deadline for entry. Not sure if this has been changed for couple of years. Anyway, I went to the police station and applied for resident permit some 10 days later to my arrival.

What I suggest is you send a mail (with your Passport details and Visa references) to UDI and confirm this with them. They will take some days to reply, but they will reply. Since you enter Norway before 13th, it might be ok to visit the Police after 13th (this is my understanding) do not rely on my information alone, the process might be stricter now. So just confirm it to be certain. Also I recommend you fly on the 10th that way you can go visit the Police before the 13th (Tuesday).

Another important thing, please make sure you enter Norway or Scandinavia before 13th. Travel documents are quiet strictly regulated in Europe, do not take any chances. Not worth it.

I came to this blog searching for from where I can do masters with low costs (within INR 10 lakh). Quota scheme is good, and I am from IIT. But I have CGPA of 7.5 only. Besides that, it seems even after one gets the quota scheme scholarship, one will be deported back after masters.

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Anand,

Firstly, since you studied in IIT, I am sure your application to any university abroad will be well received. That’s a fact.

Secondly, if you are successful to bag the quota scholarship you can finish your masters within your planned budget.

After finishing your masters with quota scholarship, you will have two options; 1) You return to your home country and the entire amount you received as scholarship is waived off. 2) You apply for work and start working in Norway and pay back 80% of the scholarship in installments.

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hi there,

Nice to hear this has article has helped you. Norway and Norwegian companies have expertise in Control systems and cybernetics and university also have programs oriented to this field. This is because Norway’s economy is based on offshore subsea oil and gas industry and marine industry. Both of which require control systems to work safely. So, you will have good exposure to industry.

I would say RAMS program is so versatile that you can also move into industries such as aerospace, marine, process, energy, mining, mass transports, airline, manufacturing etc. you get the point. A bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering with RAMS background is well suited for most of these fields. RAMS is an inter disciplinary study, I had a classmate who had bachelors in biotechnology!

If you want to continue in your field, universities such as UIO (Oslo), NTNU (Trondheim), UIT (Tromsø), UIS (Stavanger) offer many master studies linked to electrical engineering. Please check http://www.studyinnorway.no/Masters-course-search for more details about courses offered by Universities and university colleges.

PhD research in Norway are funded by sponsors or by universities with a paid monthly stipend to researchers. Hence, 90000 NOK is not necessary if you apply for PhD programs. About employment it depends how you create opportunities for yourself 🙂 Sorry for being diplomatic here but that is how it is, it is a very individualistic question.

      Hope this helps. Good luck!

If you want to do a PhD, it is also advisable to study Masters in Norway because universities give higher priority to Phd applicants who have been prior students at their university or any other Norwegian universities. It is a norm to maintain a level and quality of the Phd degree.

Again it depends on you how you convert opportunities and take initiatives during your studies. Phd. students are resources of the departments and will be required to collaborate with industry closely. So, yes there will be a lot of industry exposure. I would say this is true for both Master’s level and Phd. level studies.

Hey…really nice blog. Keep up the great work. I have the following query. I am from IIT Kharagpur. I have over 2.5 yrs of experience in a reputed company related to the offshore industry and am looking forward to apply UIS for Ms in Offshore tech. I have always had excellent extra-acads. However, my cg is just 7.25 and I doubt my application will even go beyond the screening. I am sure they would employ cg as a filter for the initial screening. Could you kindly share your views on the screening process? Which fields do you think they give the most importance?

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello there!

I think you should just apply, without thinking about the CG grades. Since you have relevant experience in the offshore industry and degree from IIT, your application is very strong already. Even in initial filtering they do look into which university you have passed out. You being an IIT alumni and with good academical background should only add to the probability of getting the offer.

I am not sure how the initial screening process is conducted, but for final screening process, professors like to use a simple merit based cut off and they also check if the candidate has undergone courses which are pre- requisite for the master level courses. For example, if you apply for offshore engineering, they would like to see if you had courses in mathematics and mechanics.

Fields like “Telematics”, “Industrial Economics”, “Cybernetics” “Nano Technology” give lot of importance to your academical performances. I hope this helps.

      Good-luck!

  27. Nilzkool says:

You mentioned that u had been accepted to UIS? Which program was it? Also, I have heard from a people that Norweigian companies usually prefer students with a good knowledge of their language? Is it hard for international students to find jobs in that case?

    • Udupiboy says:

It was in Msc. Offshore Engineering- Risk Management Specialization. UIS is a very good university, it has grown in reputation and in size really fast. Professors in the offshore engineering departments are very closely related to the oil and gas industry there.

Finding a job is up to our abilities and initiatives here, you have to apply to jobs listings by your own. Norsk language proficiency is just an advantage, it is not mandatory as such. But yes, a basic understanding of conversational Norsk would influence your job application and results for sure.

  28. Nilzkool says:

Hey..sorry to bother again.. since I need to arrange for the LORs anticipating for the second round of application, do they specify that the LORs should be from the professors specifically. Right now I have just one academic LOR and two others internship and job related

    • Udupiboy says:

It depends on you, the university do not have a fixed requirement on who writes the recommendation letters. But I think LOR’s of both academic professors and your mangers at work should be a good mix. It depends on how many you want to have. I had 3 in total, 2 from professor /HOD and 1 from my manager at work.

      • Udupiboy says:

I did get transcripts sealed and signed from all universities and school i was passed out from.
My university in India did not offer to send transcripts directly either, so I sent them in the final application package to Norway myself. I think I have mentioned this in the post.

  29. Nilzkool says:

Bro…UiS has changed the admission process. Instead of two rounds, they will be having one round of applications only from this year onward.

I suggest you contact international office on facebook or through a mail and request them to troubleshoot this issue. Must be a small error. They will help you out.

        Goodluck!

      • kwasi says:

the international office gave me a link. this is what was there.First of all, please make sure that all the required information in your form has been correctly entered – pay special attention to the dates, which if filled in incorrectly will cause problems. Dates must be written DD.MM.YYYY to be accepted by the form, and be aware that dates such as 31.09.1985 and 29.02.2011 are not in the online calendar and will not be accepted. Mistakes like these can derail your entire application, so double check. If you are certain that you have filled in all of the necessary information correctly, please try again and/or try again from a different computer/computer line and/or on a different day, as it may be a local problem. PLEASE how is the DD.MM.YYYY written

      • Udupiboy says:

This is really a sticky problem then. Not sure what they mean by “dates such as 31.09.1985 and 29.02.2011 are not in the online calendar and will not be accepted.”

        Have you tried calling them?

Amazing Job Jeevith, I have completed my bachelors degree in Marine Engineering, I’m looking forward to pursue masters degree in Naval architecture/Ship design. are there any other fields I can pursue masters in? i.e with a Marine Engineering background?

    • Udupiboy says:

Marine industry is one of the three main industries in Norway (Oil & gas, Marine & fishing). So, I am sure many universities provide marine engineering courses in Norway.

I would suggest you search courses for marine engineering in studyinnorway website they maintain up to date information on the course listings.

      Goodluck!

  33. Dare Akande says:

Hi Jeevith, Nice job are you doing here. I can not tell you how disappointed I am at the moment. ments we are required to have if we want to apply for Masters in Norway. I just got my application for MSc RAMS rejected in the preliminary round though I believe I was slightly unprepared as my school hadn’t processed my results quickly enough and GRE and TOEFL were suspended in Nigeria. I do have an international passport and graduated with a second class upper in electronic and electrical engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University (3.6 on a 5.0 scale). Will appreciate it if you could find time to chat so that I will be better prepared next year. Let’s start with how the preliminary round works. Thanks

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Dare,

I am sorry to hear that your application was rejected, but don’t lose heart. Losing something is a sign that you are going to win in the long run. I have very little know how on the preliminary applications evaluation. All I can say is you should keep working towards your dream. Work on your professional skills, either by working in a company, or collaborating with your professors to write a research paper for a journal.

Take small strides, I am sure this will make your application stronger the next time. And keep looking for other opportunities, there are many other universities these days which can offer courses similar to RAMS in Europe and in Canada. Explore your options.

I wish you nothing but good luck with your future.

    Dear Jeevith,

First of all thank you for your helpful blog, I have some questions if you answer it will be so appreciated. Nowadays I am in the middle of preparing my documents for final application of Msc in Marine Technology at Ntnu. I have bachelors degree in Marine Engineering(Gpa 2.96/4) at Istanbul Technical University and one year work experience as an oceangoing watchkeeping engineer. I want to hear any advices from you about statement of purposes which already I did many researches but still feel unconfident about it.It will be very helpful your advice about this matter as a student which succeed to get an admission.
And also, sorry maybe I did not catch the point about financing document, should the currency be converted to NOK?
    Thank you.

    • medet says:

Sorry forget the questions about currency, I found it.

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Medet,
When I was writing my SOP I used these pointers http://www.i20fever.com/applications/statementofpurpose.html . It took me a long time to frame a good SOP, it is always good to start early.

About being confident, start thinking this way: if you can pass the preliminary you must have something which is working for you, so you just have to believe that you will make the final round too.

Which ever currency you send it will be converted into NOK, so there is no hard and fast rule to send it only in NOK. Euro or Dollars are good choices as well.

Good luck and keep your spirits up 🙂

    Hello
Well I am 25 year old working as Electrical officer on board DP 2 vessel with Greatship India.
I have completed my B.tech in Electrical and Electronics engineering from andhra University.

Well being working on DP vessel I have got interested in Dynamic positioning /Marine cybernetics/and autonomous vehicles .
And as NTNU does provide an course in Ms in marine cybernetics soI am looking forward to applying for the program.

My only worries are regarding job after by MS.Also as I work in DP vessel so it it possible should i apply to Stavanger university i mean as Stavanger is been the center of offshore industry.

Also what all jobs i can apply for if i do get an job. Also the expenses I mean although been working in offshore industy for a while i do have an healthy bank balance which can easily cover my expenses

Any information in this regard will be beneficial to make an decision

    hoping for an reply
    regards
    Deepak

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Deepak,

Both NTNU and Stavanger university are very good choices for many reasons and one of them being the opportunities these institutions provide for master students throughout the course (site visits, summer jobs, career fairs, company thesis). If you do well in your academics, these opportunities will only keep increasing.
So, I don’t think you should think about the job options instead I would say focus on the course subjects and assess if it fits your interest. That said, since you have relevant work experience you can assess this fit way better than other applicants who lack relevant experience. That would be your advantage.

As you rightly pointed out, Stavanger (expats city) is the oil capital of Europe, so there are countless number of marine/oil companies there. While Trondheim (student city) can provide you a very warm and fun loving student life. Both cities have their own pros and cons.

      Funds:
If you can control your monthly expenses, I would estimate you can finish the 2 year masters course with around 140000 NOK.

      Hope this helps. Goodluck!

  36. Vaibhav says:

Hi this message is long , so please bare with me.
As mentioned earlier I have done BE marine engineering. But, I was a later entry student.

10th Grade + 3 years (Diploma in Mechanical Engineering) + 3 years (Bachelors of engineering in Marine engineering) = 16 years of education.

I send emails to universities I have applied explaining my scenario.I did the same to swedish schools and apparently they are aware of Indian education system and would consider my application.

University of University of Stavanger replied” In order to be eligible for this Master’s Degree programme at the University of Stavanger, applicants from India must document:Higher Secondary Certificate issued by State Secondary School Boards+4 years of University Education. Unfortunately, you are not eligible for this Master’s Degree programme at the university of Stavanger.
We wish you good luck with your future endeavors.”

aalesund university college replied: “The minimum academic requirement for admission to universities and university colleges in Norway is called Higher Education Entrance Qualification. For international applicants, the requirements are specified in the “GSU-list”. Due to this requirement, international must normally have obtained an undergraduate degree/Bachelor’s degree of 4 years duration. Please refer to the GSU-list to find information about the academic and English requirements for your country.”

NTNU hasn’t replied yet.Does this mean I do not qualify for higher education in norway? Can I appeal somewhere? Please give your Inputs?
    Regards

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hi Vaibhav,

I did some research on the Norwegian websites, the closest link to your issue I got was http://www.nokut.no/en/Facts-and-statistics/Surveys-and-databases/GSU-list/.

It specifies minimum requirements for student to study in Norway, use the drop down button or open the PDF in the link to understand why both Stavanger and Ålesund universities have answered the way they have.

My advice would be to contact http://www.nokut.no/no/ and confirm your position with them, they would know where this requirement came from and to which universities this requirement encompasses and why it affects you.

Just ask them frankly don’t hesitate. Explain your point and wait for their reply, or call them. What they do not understand is that Diploma includes 11 and 12th grade certificate. Their main concern would be the amount of Maths, Physics and Chemistry classes you had to take in you bachelors since you joined in the 2nd year. But as far as I know, in Karnataka my classmates joining from Diploma had to take 1year mathematic exams before they passed 3rd year of engineering.

  37. Vaibhav says:

I explained my case to aalesund university college that many students from India have a similar background like me. They do apply to different masters programs and are selected worldwide .Their response was
“NOKUT, the national body for quality in education, states the following regarding the Indian education system:
    – A 3 year Bachelor’s degree is approved as equivalent to 2 years of higher education in Norway. The minimum requirement for admission to the Master’s degree program in Ship Design is a 3 years Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. A degree equivalent to 2 years of education does therefore not fulfill this requirement.”

I then contacted NOKUT, and this was their response
” You have to contact the University or the University college you want to study to for this question. There are different admission requirements for different study programmes and we do not have the information on what requirements they have.”

It is sad that both aalesund university college and NOKUT failed to resolve the issue. Both were unable to come up with a clear answer. Is WES or other similar elevation valid in norway?, I know education elevation works in USA.

    • Udupiboy says:

I thought atleast one of them would reply positively to it. I have not come across any governmental body to appeal against such things.

Lets hope, NTNU considers you application, they too dont have enough staff to reply to applicants in this intermediate time of application process.

      • Vaibhav says:

        Hi,
As you have mentioned in the blog, Aalesund University college having global partners (consultancy) .So, I casually dropped a mail to its Indian partner. The representative from the consultancy informed me that, 10 th grade + 3 years diploma + 3 years of engineering is fine and is accepted in Norway. May be there was some sort of miscommunication with the university.

But I guess I did a grave mistake, by enclosing a letter in the application package explaining my case to the university. I hope they ignore the enclosed letter. BTW the following was the content of my letter (I know it’s long, Please bear with me)

“In India, we have the facility to opt for Diploma in Engineering after 10th Grade. This Diploma in Engineering is a 3 years Course recognized by State Government and Government of India. After completing this 3 years of Diploma in First Class (60% and above), a student is Eligible to directly enter into the Second year of Bachelor of Engineering degree programme in a relevant field (i.e. Marine engineering in my Case). So the Bachelors of engineering in my Case course are of 3 years instead of 4years.

10th Grade + 3 years (Diploma in Mechanical Engineering) + 3 years (Bachelors of engineering in Marine engineering) = 16 years of education.

This 3 years of diploma is equivalent and can be treated as good as a Higher Secondary Certificate/ Intermediate Examination Certificate. As mentioned earlier, after completion of diploma we have option to enter directly into the Second year of Bachelor’s degree programme directly. This, three years of bachelor of engineering degree is the same 4 years degree. But, with exemption from the first year of the degree.
I am attaching both, my diploma and bachelor’s degree transcripts and certificates.
I will be happy to provide any further information that may be necessary.”

Should I tell them to cross check with it’s Indian partner?

      • Udupiboy says:

        Hi Vaibhav,

Frankly, I don’t think you did a mistake. All you did was to give the right information to the person thousands of miles away reading your application. There is nothing wrong in doing that. All I can ask you to do now is be positive with the NTNU application and your application in Sweden.

If you ask them to cross check (Åalesund university) they might consider the application, but I know that they give applicants from their partner consultants first choice in any master applications. Again, this is my opinion, I might be wrong. Anyway, send them the mail about what their partner in India said, they should know their own internal misunderstanding.

Good things happen to good people. Be positive about other remaining applications.
        Cheers!

  38. Pedro says:

    Hi Jeevith!

First of all, congrats for this post! Really, really good and helpful.
I have applied for a MSc programme (Globalization, Politics and Culture) at NTNU under the Quota Scheme. The FAQ at NTNU’s website is great and answers most of my questions, but what I’ve been really looking for are personal testimonial from people who’s been accepted at any master’s programme.
I believe I’ve delivered a strong application: I was exchange student in Norway some years ago (High School program, though); I got good Recommendation Letters from professors; I spent a lot of time writing and re-writing my Letter of Motivation; etc. What worries me is the “academic excellence”-factor: my avarage final grade from my BA degree is a “B” (using the Norwegian grading scale). Do you honestly think I still have a chance to be accepted under the Quota Scheme? I haven’t applied for self-financing, only under Quota Scheme. It kills me not to know the weight of the avarage grade in their decision. Do you think that they actually consider the application as whole (letters of recommendation, CV, personal statement, etc) or it ultimately comes down to the grade?

I know it’s a hard question. I’m just a very nervous – but confident still – applicant looking for motivation! 🙂

    Thanks!
    Pedro

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Pedro,

I am glad that this post has helped you. I remember the nervous days for those 5 longs months after applying. But I think it is part and parcel of a university application. To be frank with you, your grades are good according to Norwegian grading standard. C is considered as good, and B is considered Very good and A is considered excellent. The admission committee at the department also reads other application documents such as CV and Motivation letter. However, grades are definitely given first priority.

You have put all the effort you can, now the ball is in their court. Just think that you already have the offer and you are waiting for a confirmation letter.

I hope you get selected and I wish you good luck with any other application as well.
      Cheers!

      • Pedro says:

Thanks a lot for you kind reply! I also have a high TOEFL score. Well, I’ll just hope they take the whole application under consideration – and try not to be so paranoid.

I’ll be in Bergen visiting my host family in May, so whether things go right or wrong, there will be lots of Norwegian chocolate and beers to either celebrate (hopefully!) or drown my sorrows.

        Take care!

I found your blog very helpful. I was recently accepted at Telemark to study Energy and Environmental Technology under quota scheme. I just heard rumor that even quota scheme scholars do get rejected. How true is it? Is it possible even if I fulfill all the requirements?

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Neermal,

Congratulations on getting the quota scholarship. I actually don’t understand your question. Which rejection are you talking about? Are you talking about student visa application? Please don’t listen to humors just apply for the visa without any worries. The rumors might be just made up by someone. If you fulfill all requirements then I think you should not weigh any other external factors affecting UDI’s decision.

I have a question regarding admissions. I have been accepted to UiS and they are waiting for my response until the 5th of May. I have also applied to UiO, but they only send out invitations 20th of May. I am more interested in studying at UiO but I don’t want to loose the place in UiS if I don’t get accepted to UiO. Can I accept the invitation to UiS and change my mind later? Or would that cancel my application to UiO?
    Thanks in advance!

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello,
It is very hard to provide you a suggestion on this question. Both university are great in their own right. If I was you, I would take UIs offer and then try to transfer my credits of the first year masters and move to UiO. That said, I am not sure how this switch can be formalised in Norway. I am not sure if it is even possible. But this is my opinion only. “A bird in hand is better than ten in the air.”

What you could do is talk to a professor in UIs and enquiry if such a switch is possible. Professor in Norway are very kind and I am sure they will help you decide.

  43. Hi,

Let me begin by saying how much of a relief it was to find something to guide me through the whole procedure on the internet on one page. I really appreciate the efforts you put into making this blog entry.

I’ve shortlisted the Marine Engineering course at NTNU as one of the universities I’m applying to. My doubt is, the website mentions that I need a Bachelors degree in any Marine Engineering related course as mentioned in this link under the topic ‘Requirements’-http://www.ntnu.edu/studies/msn1/admission

I’m currently doing my Mechanical Engineering(B.Tech) course at NIT, Trichy. Am I qualified to apply for this course despite the fact that their requirements mentions clearly that people with Marine Engineering course background can apply?

    Thank you!

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Sushil,

I hope it helps you along the process, that was the main aim to help students get information on Norwegian universities.

I looked into the requirements link, I am not sure if your background will be relevant, just my opinion. Applicants who have the relevant naval background might be shortlisted before they go into assessing candidates with other stream in bachelors (mechanical, mechatronics etc.)

If I were you, I would email the program co-ordinator and be open about my wishes to apply and ask him/her if I satisfy the requirements. I also highly recommend you look at the RAMS master’s course, which is very closely related to mechanical engineering and is extremely interesting field. http://www.ntnu.edu/studies/msrams

      Goodluck!

I have a question that what is gonna happen if I dont go to NTNU after submitting the acceptance letter?

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Akshay,

I am not sure what are the consequences of doing that. I know that inorder to accept the offer you are required to transfer funds to NTNU account, but I am not sure how it can be reclaimed if you backout from the acceptance. I would advice you call the international office of NTNU and ask them this question. They would give you the right answer. My applogies for the late reply.

NTNU Petroleum department is the crown jewel of NTNU. The department has close collaboration with the industry and many senior alumini work in the top management of oil and gas companies. In short this department has some serious clout in petroleum industry.

      Cheers!

  45. Pedro says:

    Hello!

I wrote here some months ago, and now I’m back with good news: I was admitted to NTNU under the Quota Scheme! I’m very excited, and already counting the days to move to Trondheim. I tried to look for info about the the student village Moholt on SiT’s website, but couldn’t get the answers to some of my questions. Maybe you can help me!

They say Internet is included, and that we need to bring our own cable. Is it easy to get connected (just plugging the cable) or is it necessary some kind of login? (ps: I can’t believe they don’t have wi-fi!)

Is the kitchen equipped with all appliances (cutlery, plates, pans, etc?) or does the student need to buy them?

Cellphone plans: how does it work in Norway? I did some research and it seems like if you don’t have a national ID number, you can only purchase prepaid SIM cards.

    Thank you!

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hi Pedro,
      Congratulations!!!

Ya sadly SIT does not provide wifi connection, rather you get an 100mbps lan/internet port. It’s Damn fast! You have to buy a Wi fi router if you want a Wi fi set up. I suggest you get it from home, will be much cheaper.

No cutlery items in the kitchen are provided. However, if you are lucky previous tenants could leave their stuff for people coming next to them.
Wait until the Orientation week, ISF student union will provide you a good chess prepaid offer. Almost all students will have a chess number and chess to chess is a free call. Yes when you need a postpaid number the telecom company performs a background check and hence people just entering Norway cannot get a postpaid plan ( they credit check using your national 11 digest number when you get after a month of entering Norway)
Sorry for the late reply, have been busy lately.

      Good luck!

    hi bro
i am into my final year BE (Electrical and electronics engineering)
how good is norway for MS courses in electrical?
i hav a lot of interest in logistics and petroleum subjects.. but ll i be eligible for those?

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hi Prashanth,

With bachelors in E&C there are many master courses to which you are eligible in Norway. The term electrical engineering is quiet broad when you are thinking about masters, I suggest you to think which subject within electrical engineering interests you most. For example, there are courses on turbine engineering, hydro-power engineering etc. You can also think about courses such as telematics, cybernetics which have core application in the petroleum industry.

To change your stream so drastically from E&C to logistics or petroleum is not a wise idea, because of two reasons: you will lack bachelor course credits in these stream and that there are other graduates who belong to these backgrounds who will be given first preference during selection.

Keep looking, you will surely find something which you will like studying.

Sorry to ask u a tiny question, I mean it’s just for my peace if mind. This is regarding Norway universities. If I submit my graduation certificate later on in the month if may or June and I will if course let them know that my university will only provide me d certificate after their actual admission date, but my university will hand me a letter stating my authenticity etc. , will that actually work?
Sorry for asking but this question is killing me!
    Nevertheless, thanks a million…Tusen takk!!!

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Prachurya,

I am glad that this helps you.

I think it is not a big issue, the same thing is true in Norway as well. Students do have to wait for a certain duration for their authentic bachelor or master certificate. Meanwhile, they are given a provisional certificate to prove their scores to other universities, immigration offices or employers. So, this also should be ok in your case.
Anyway to be on the safer side, it is always good to contact your program coordinator at the department or admissions committee and let them know about your situation. You can either call or email them but do this in the later stage (after getting selected for the final application round)

      Good luck !

  48. Danish says:

    Hi Jeevith,

My name is Danish. I graduated with a BEng (hons) Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Hertfordshire, UK. The degree classification was a 2:1 (3.5 gpa). However, after completing it, I have come back to my home country and wishing to apply to UiS for my Msc in Petroleum Engineering (well engineering).

My major concern is that there are only two tutors that I can get hold of at the moment for my recommendation letters (LORs), and I have repeated a module with one of them. I cannot open the LOR that has been sent to me as it is sealed and am worried if me repeating the module in his subject will matter or is it normally mentioned in the LORs?

Secondly, I do have a good degree classification but have repeated a few modules during University. Is this something worth panicking about or the overall classification outweighs it?

I have an internship under my belt too as a junior drilling engineer which hopefully will come handy too during my application.

Anyway, congratulations on having such a helpful post.

Looking forward for you to shed some light on the queries above.

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hi Danish,

Point 1: LOR s are good enough just to make your application solid you can also ask your manager during the internship to recommend you. I am sure they will help you get it. That way you have 2 from academia and one from industry.

Point 2: As far as I know, the number of attempts to finish a subject would not matter if your final bachelor certificate discards it as well. As I see it, your gpa score is what will be scrutinized more than how many times you have take the courses. In most university certificates they mention the basis for calculation of candidates GPA, if that ( multiple attempts) is mentioned in your certificate then the same will be read by the admissions committee if not, you just don’t have to worry about it. Either ways I would not worry about this. I had multiple attempts in my bachelors as well so give it much thought, after all that made us stronger 🙂

Point 3: Your internship will be your great asset in your application. University of Stavanger has very close collaboration with the oil and gas industry and your prior experience will only boast your chances. UiS has had great success with their offshore engineering masters course, so that is a positive as well for your future opportunities.

Hope this helps. Good luck !

      • Danish says:

Thanks for the reply mate. I just got my documents all sealed from the university but they named it for WES canada and I have asked them to correct it. However,I did my foundation after alevel with a university affiliated college which is at the university and in the cover letter that the university is sending to UiS, it says I started with them in the second year of Beng (hons) Mechanical Engieering, they have not written about my foundation and first year which i did from the university affiliated college. Will this give UiS the impression that I have done just a 2 year programe or cause any kind of confusion?

It is a stressful stage, collecting all the documents 🙂

  49. Herman Muriel says:

    Hi Jeevith,

My name is Herman, I am from Colombia. Firstly, I want to thank you for write this article, it’s very helpful. I’m planning to apply to the Msc in Petroleum Engineering in NTNU in Trondheim. I just wanted to know what are the chances to be admitted? I have a Bachelor in Petroleum Engineering from the industrial university of santader (Colombia), my final GPA was 4.39/5.0. I also was awarded with the CUM LAUDE distinction for being an outstanding student during my undergraduate program. The problem is that I do not have work experience, I graduated last December, and my work experience is research experience. My final undergraduate dissertation got the highest score 5.0/5.0. After I am graduated, I spent some time getting ready for get a good TOEFL(I got 92) and I am learning french right now. I can speak spanish(native) english(92/120) according to TOEFL. I can speak very well french and I have little knowledge of italian and german, I am studying norwegian by internet, I want to say at least hello if I get admitted. jajajaja

I want to ask you that if there are many Colombians there? in NTNU? in the msc petroleum engineering program?

Other concern is, I don’t know the meaning when the university say a certified copy? is that the scanned document with the signs and the documents of apostille? The other thing is how do I certify my passport(in a notary)?

You also say that one must send 3 LOR but I in the webpage only required 2, I got 2, one from my advisor in my final dissertation and one from the evaluator of my final research work. I don’t have 1 LOR from work. I am worried about that.

I am working right now in my SOP, I want to do sth amazing, it’s vital for the application, I want catch the attention of the reader.

Thank you again for this amazing post.

    Sincerely yours,

    Herman Muriel
    Colombian Friend

    • Udupiboy says:

I am so sorry for not being able to reply till now, I have been busy.

Yes sure you can apply as I see it having good grades is what matters to get selected. Don’t worry about the work experience since you have good academics and have awards to showcase, I don’t think you should worry. Just go forward and apply.

TOEFL score is good for NTNU I think, please cross check it with requirements on NTNU page.

A certified copy is one which has either a sign and seal of the university or one which has a seal and sign from a lawyer authenticating your certificates.

I am sure there are many Colombians in Norway and NTNU , check facebook for groups I am sure you will find many Colombians.

Send what is required now, this article is almost 5 years old now. Since I had 3 LOR s I sent three, but it may be two for you so that’s not a problem? Good luck with your SOP, take it slow and reflect deeply on why you want from the study. Always start with why.. Motivation is the key.

      Good luck Herman 🙂

    Hi Jeevith,

I have a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, and a master’s degree in Sustainable Energy Technology, but I’m still interested to apply for master in Chemical Engineering in NTNU or Process Technology in Telemark University College. Do you think that my master’s degree will harm my application? Do you probably have seen something like this?

    Thank you! 🙂

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hi Julio,

Please check if the curriculum of your previous masters does not have similar or same topics when compared to NTNUs chemical engineering masters. If they do there is a very high chance that your application will not be given the same weight. One of my friends in the university told me that for chemical engineering masters programme the department prefers people who have not had masters in the similar or same field from before. If you masters was entirely different, then I believe you have the relevant background to apply for the masters program at NTNU.

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers and good luck!

      • julio says:

Thank you for the quick response!
My master’s degree is a bit similar to this chemical engineering master program. I checked the curriculum and there’s two similar courses out of more than 10 courses. Do you know if it is possible for the admission to check it first before I spend a lot of efforts in applying? Or can I not mention my master’s degree in the application but will have two years absence doing nothing?

    Hello Jeevith!
I am studying a dual degree course in B.E Chemcial engineering and MBA ( in the 9th semester out of the total 10 semesters ) from Panjab University , Chandigarh. I am currently running with a cgpa of 6.995/10 absolute scale. I want to apply for masters in chemical engineerng NTNU. I have a good record in extracurricular activities and I am giving toefl in november . Does my cgpa has a negative effect on the selection process ? But it is a first division . Marking scheme is a bit stern . Should i apply for the preliminary application in november or now ?

    • Udupiboy says:

      Hello Sahil,

I think you should apply and give it a shot. Academics are important but so is the extracurricular. Chemical engineering at NTNU is a very good department as well. Do not worry about your marks, just apply and do well in TOEFL that can help as well.
Sorry for the late reply, I somehow missed replying to your question before this.
      Goodluck!

      • Sahil says:

As there is only one application this year( no preliminary) , so i will definitely apply . Another question , do we have to opt for a specialized stream in chem engg too ? ( i mean while applying ) . Thanks and Happy Diwali !

      • Sorry Sahil I am not sure about the new application process. I know they have centralized the application process by asking applicants to apply through a application portal. I am sure you will figure it out. Good luck again. 🙂

    • Hello,

If the university website specifically talks about course requirements, it is very difficult to say if they will relax on those requirements. The issue is that, the university gets many applications and they can pic and chose candidates fulfilling course requirements. This is one way to filter applicants. UIS in recent years has been very strict with requirements and their application screening is known to be quite extensive.

All I can say to you is email the course coordinator and ask him if this is a problem in your application. Either ways, If I were you, I would still apply to the program. We have to play it, to win it 🙂

There are other good universities which offer process engineering masters programs in Norway. Bergen university, telemark university, Oslo university.

Wish you good luck with your applications 🙂
      Cheers!

    Hi jeevith,
We have spoken before. Basically I have done mechanical engineering from UK. Few moments ago i opened the link to a preliminary application survey at the UiS website. It asked if I had studied some particular modules, when I checked ”no”. It said I am not eligible.I am currently working as a trainee drilling engineer( been 8 months). Do I still send my application to them? or is it not gonna be looked at because I know some people who did mechanical engineering like myself and got into it with even 5-6 months experience.

    • Hi.

If the application asks for certain requirements, I believe they will important. You could also ask the department directly. Professors usually will reply to questions concerning requirements of modules for the subjects which they tutor.

Sorry for a late reply. Hope this helps.

    Hello sir,
    This is Ganesh from Bangalore.
I am writing to thank you for your immense help in realizing my dream today.
It seems as though I have been walking in your footsteps. I studied my BE at MSRIT, Bangalore in the civil engineering department (Close to your IEM department :p).
I came across your blog when I was in my second year and It was the moment that I decided that I will be studying in Norway someday. You opened up my horizon to the quality, beauty and opportunities of the Scandinavian universities.
I took your advice and I worked very hard. I did very well at MSRIT and in the standardized tests and I also had the opportunities of joining many internships which helped build my resume.
I started looking into the universities in Norway and Sweden and I applied to the highly reputed universities for fall 2015 admissions. Today I am immensely happy to let you know that I have got admitted into “Chalmers University” of Sweden, one of the top universities for technology in the world.
I owe you a great deal for helping me realize my dream of studying in a highly reputed university.
What you are doing through this platform is sincerely awesome. Thank you
I have applied to NTNU as well and I am awaiting the admission results.
Anyways, I thought I should thank you for the good work you are doing sir.
Hope I can meet you someday.

And also please let me know about sweden if you have any knowledge of it.
    Cheers !!

    • Please don’t address me as Sir. My name is Jeevith. It is good to hear that this post helped you along your application journey. I hope you a great time at Chalmers. It is offcourse a very good institution in Europe and you will have good international exposure there. Living in Sweden is very similar to Norway, so that’s good too. Future opportunities are good in both countries with good grades and quality project work in masters. The visa process is not as difficult compared to other western countries. So you have completed the difficult tasks in this process. I wish you good luck once again.

      Cheers!

    Hi Jeevith,
Thanks much for very helpful blog.
Could you kindly advise on this:

I graduated from University of Nottingham,U.K, with GPA 50/100, majoring in Finance, Accounting.
After that, i have 2 years working experience on Logistic and Business field.

Considering my low GPA and experience, is there any possibility to get admission to study Master in Norway ?

    Thank you very much !

    • Hey Khiem!

I am glad the blog is serving its purpose.
I am not very certain as to the admission process the admission committees follow. Since you are related to the management side, it may be that your work experience in weighted much more that your GPA. But it is a very trick question to answer. I hope you keep your spirits up and think you can make it. We never know 🙂

I hope you get the course which you want.

      Cheers!

  57. Rohini says:

    Hi Jeevith,
Nice piece of work there, putting up all the info. Really appreciate your work.

I have received admit from UiS for Petroleum Engineering. Can you please let me know how is the program if you can and job prospects and also I would really appreciate if you could clear my doubts regarding transfer of funds to the university as I am having trouble getting the info from my bank.

1.What is the procedure to transfer – do I have to transfer it from bank or can I transfer it through online banking.
2.Generally what are the charges for transferring
3.Can we transfer the amount in one go.

    Thank you!

    • Congratulations Rohini!

I am happy this has helped you.

University of Stavanger is a very prestigious university in Norway. It is a good university to study at and Stavanger is a good city to live in as well.

      1. The procedure should be similar to as mentioned in the offer letter. The offer letter gives you a account number and other bank details. You just have to wire transfer the required funds to the given account details in the offer letter. I recommend you to wire transfer from the bank and not from online accounts just to be sure.

      2. Charges must not be much, I can faintly remember it to be around 400 rs. I think, I am not sure. That was for 90000 NOK

      3. Yes, you can transfer the amount in one go. What I did was to go to the main regional office of my bank which handles foreign transfers. Doing this you ensure things go smoothly.

I know one more person who has accepted the offer at Stavanger University this year. You probably can contact him- his LinkedIn name is “Manoj Kumar Mahendran” (Offshore Technology). I know he has transferred the required amount.

Good luck to you with the last few processes 🙂

      • Rohini says:

        Hi Jeevith,

Thanks a million for the info.

If I may ask what is your opinion on Petroleum Engineering from University of Alaska fairbanks as compared to UiS. I have actually received a scholarship from alaska but can’t make up my mind now. Even I know now that university of stavanger is one of best uni for petroleum engineering. Would really appreciate your view on this.

        Thanks!

      • Hi,

I have little are no information about Alaskan universities. Financially, Norway would cost you close to 12 or 13 lakhs for 2 years. You could compare that to the scholarship you would receive in Alaska. This is a fact that for offshore petroleum engineering, Norway leads the world in technology development closely followed by the UK. US has lot of onshore reserves and offshore exploration is not extensive (many reasons for this). I say this because, if you want to learn the new trends, you will need to learn it from people who are trying new technology, that’s Norwegian petroleum industry. Stavanger being the power capital of Europe, has its share of fame with global petroleum perspective.

I know of some friends who got their visa extended to search for jobs. But I am not sure how the process works. I don’t think this should drive your choice though.

        Hope this helps.

  58. Herman Muriel says:

    Hello Jeevith,

It’s me again, Herman from Colombia. Thanks for the info again. I have news. I have been accepted to Stavanger. I applied too to NTNU but the answer hasn’t come yet. The answer will arrive this week. I do not know what to do. I like so much NTNU but I really like where UiS is located. I would like you to give me your opinion about Petroleum Engineering Program in this University, which one is better? which one do you recommend me please? I haven’t done the transfer to stavanger because I am waiting for NTNU, I’d really appreciate your opinion, I know you know more and you have been in norway since some years ago. Please.

    • Congratulations Herman,

Wait for the answer of NTNU, but if it does not come in the next 5 days, go with UIS. A bird in hand is better than 10 in the air.

UiS has great line of of faculties across all departments, with exposure to industrial projects the faculty has lot of offer. It is your responsibility to make opportunities during and after your masters.

NTNU is top university because it has a long lineage. UiS if good because it is connected to the industrial hub of Norwegian oil and gas industry.

      Hope this helps.

  59. Rohini says:

    Hi Jeevith,

Sorry for asking so many queries. This is the last one.
I would like to know that after completing Master’s, how many days can we stay there and search for jobs. Is it hard to get the visa after master’s? I am not asking for PR, but like in US you can stay for six months or so and search a job. How about norway?

  60. Herman Muriel says:

Thank you for your prompt answer, your words truly motivate me. I’m planning to wait till next Friday otherwise I’ll transfer the money to start my process with Stavanger! I understand that Stavanger besides being a relatively new university offers a lot opportunities for projects and internships, and I also wanted to ask you if NTNU offers the same opportunities? Pleas just this question. Herman again.

    • NTNU will offer a lot too. 6 out of 10 engineers working in industry are from NTNU, that’s a fact. Trondheim is no doubt better student town then Stavanger, but Stavanger has international exposure. So both are unique it their own way.

      Good luck.

  61. Krishna Teja says:

    Hi Jeevith,

Nice piece of work here, Hatsoff to your contribution.

Your blog has been really helpful, I just found your blog 6-7 days back, if I had found it earlier it would have saved half of my time. But anyways, I am from Pune and have received admit from UiS for Petroleum Engineering and I am in a difficult situation here and would appreciate your help. I am in the process of visa and visited the application center in pune. They are asking for Original Birth Certificate to be apostilled or attested by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), have no info about that. Can you please let me know if you did any such procedure and how its done and where can I get the certificate attested, as the application center guys also don’t know from where to get the certificate attested, saying only one thing that – its the requirement of Delhi embassy. And time is running fast, as visa takes long to process – everybody’s saying.

    Sorry for the long post.

    Regards,
    Nachiket.

    Hi Jeevith…

Its a great blog written by you with lot of details.

May be you can add something in that about the timelines and process of applying RP.
I am future student of NTNU and Orientation week starts on 10Aug, my application to UDI is send today by Embassy at India….If you can comment please give me an idea for the time/days should I expect the call from Embassy for Visa stamping?

    • Glad at this helped you.
Visa timeline depends on the applicant background so haven’t written about it, but general process is written about. It took about 2 months to get the RP decision ( applied on 26th May – decision received on July 17th) That was 5 years ago, so it might be less or more now, you should check UDI if they have updated the case processing times.

Good luck to you in your studies 🙂

I have two years of work experience and i want to study masters of sustainable architecture from NTNU. How much chances are there that with this percentage i will get admission?
    Thank you

    • Hi Deepshikha,

I am really sorry for a very late reply.
It is very hard to say how the department filters applications. It is department specific. That said, having relevant work experience will definitely help your cause and since your field is more hands-on, such work experience will be valued highly, I would think.

I wish you goodluck with the process.
      Cheers.

    Hi sir.
    Really very helpful blog.
I am pursuing b tech in civil engineering(final year) and my percentage till now is 71% and it will be around 72-73% till my degree ends in june 2016. I want to study master of project management from NTNU. Should i apply this year only or after my degree gets over? Also i am a national table tennis player and i have played 13 national championships and inter university and some other co curricular activities. I just want to ask you with this percentage and extra curricular activities what are the chances that i will get admission in NTNU? Since i am in college so from whom i should get the LOR’s?
And how much time before the preliminary round i should prepare SOP and LOR’s?

    • Hi Shoryar,

You are taking a good initiative. Just an engineering degree is no good, and I am happy you realize that this early.

OK, Extra-curicular is good to have but there are no special treatment for sportsmen. Your application will be treated like all others. It is a very tricky call, some departments in NTNU require your bachelor certificate, while some do not. You will have to ask the department or course coordinator about this.

You can ask two or three of your supervisors to write LOR’s for you or, you can propose the main body of recommendation and ask them to sign it for you. Remember to seal them in envelopes with department seal.

SOP and LOR’s are not required in the preliminary round, as far as I remember. Some procedures have now changed since, so be aware that this post is 5.5 years old.

      I wish you goodluck! Cheers.

    Hi Jeevith,

Your website is really useful and thank you for giving all the needed information.

I am hoping to apply for a masters degree in NTNU. They have an online application system known as Søknadsweb. They have asked to upload several documents via that system for my masters. But they haven’t mentioned anything about LOR (letter of recommendation). So do I have to upload that also or shall I upload only the documents they have mentioned in the university website? Is Søknadsweb the preliminary application system you have mentioned above?
Please be kind enough to reply as soon as possible.

    • The process has slightly changed and as far as I know, søknadsweb is the new portal where all the applicants submit their preliminary applications. You will need he LOR for the final application.

  69. Naveen says:

    Hi Jeevith,
I got admission to NTNU this autumn 2016. Can you please tell me whether it’s possible to get part-time jobs in Trondheim? If so what kind of jobs? Any possibility to work in projects at university such as at SINTEF etc?

    • It depends on you and your networking skills, I know people who have part time jobs in hotels/bars or as newspaper distributors. I suggest you don’t have high expectations but on the other had I don’t mean to say there are no part time times. You have to try for yourself to know.

Summer jobs and other academical jobs may be available depending on your relation with the professors. Good luck to you 🙂

      • Naveen says:

Thank you for your reply. I got admission in the field of MSc in Marine Coastal Development. Can you tell me about after- study job possibilities in Norway in this field of study (i.e. marine biology, marine biotechnology, aquaculture etc?). Maybe some of your friends’ got jobs in this field?

      • Hi Naveen,
As I tell any applicant who has ever asked me this question on Jobs. I don’t know, it depends on you always. It depends on many factors, some external which you cant control some internal which you can. I don’t want to give you any wrong idea. Currently Norway is having a tough time in the oil and gas industry but industry such as marine biology and aquaculture are booming. Specially in aquaculture, companies would prefer candidates with good Norwegian skills since the work force are mostly Norwegians. Language in Norway is important factor too.
I don’t have friends working in the fields you mentioned, so I would not be the right person to give you an idea on this. Good luck with the process.

    Hi Jeevith,

This is Chaitra from Mysuru. Your blog has helped a lot during the application process to NTNU. I’ve applied to Msc Geotechnics and Geohazards. Awaiting results. It’s really difficult to find information about this course at NTNU. If you have contacts of any alumni or current students who are studying Geotechnics, please pass on the contact. I really wish to speak to someone who is/has studied this course.

    • Hi Chaitra,

That is good to hear that this has helped you. I know one person in Geophysics. I can give her contact to you throw email. I will email you shortly. Good luck with the process.

  71. Naveen says:

    Hi Jeevith,

As I have mentioned earlier, I was admitted to a MSc program at NTNU this year autumn. At NTNU they have requested me to deposit a certain NOK amount to their deposit account for international students in order to apply for student visa to Norway. Because, financial statement from a Norwegian bank account is needed to apply for visa. But I wish to know whether is it safe to transfer money to their account? (internet transactions have some risk) or instead a bank draft can be used for this? Can you please tell me your own experience when you got admission for MSc?

    • Dont worry about the transfer. Just ensure you have the right account number and trust the bank makes no mistake. With such amounts, even banks are very careful, so they will be careful to not miss type the account numbers (its too much work for them to correct)

The money you transfer is safe with NTNU (in your name) You will not receive any interest on the amount. Once you are here, it takes about a month to get your money back, say around end of September.

I sent it through my Indian bank (Corporation Bank) remittance branch. Had no issues, NTNU sent me the confirmation and also got confirmation from my bank about the transfer. Good luck!

  72. shoryar says:

    Hi sir
Your blog really helped me a lot.
I wanted to ask , can we apply for more then one course priority wise at ntnu and university of stavanger. How many courses we can apply for? And also for different courses we apply we have to draft different LOR’s and SOP or only one will work as we are applying priority wise?

    Thanks in advance

    • Hi Shoryar, I am no sir. Just address me as Jeevith.

The process is such that you get to choose two masters. Basically, you provide your preference between two master programs. Priority 1 and 2.

Try to get a generic LORs so that it is easily applicable to any course or university you apply to. SOP, definitely will need to be altered according to the course you apply to, but since its you who write it, it should be ease to edit it to the specific program.
I am happy that this post has helped you. Goodluck, cheers.

Hello! Thank you so much for the article! I would like to apply on NTNU. My question is, do they look on my grades in my application? Because in other ways I think that my profile is perfect, I have a praxes in my major, my lecteur like me and hope that she give me a good letter, I have a extra activities and also part-timing….. But my grades arent so great, so is it possible to get in even with this? Thank you so much 🙂

    • Hi Trish,

Some professors look at grades, while others look at the entire application package. You will only know, if you apply. The process of application also has changed considerably.

      Goodluck!

  74. Thank you so much for the wonderful insight into studying in Norway. I understand that it is highly competitive to get into NTNU. I am a pre-final year with a cgpa 6.5 Do I stand a chance in pursuing MSc in material science ?

    Cheers !

    • Hi Srinidy,

It is very difficult to say what the requirements are from the selection committee. Some are grades oriented, while others look at the entire application package. You will only know, if you apply.

The process of application also has changed considerably.

The best advice I can give is to improve to the level you can and then apply in your final year. Let the universe take care of the results 🙂

      Goodluck!

Hi !! Jeevith very well written everything .

I am a bachelors and masters passout from IIT madras and one year working with L&T and had applied to PhD program ( Installation of offshore wind turbine) at Marintek. I was informed that i was in the top 5 of their shortlist( among 68 applicants) and i had a small informal interview with the professor to follow up with where he informed that he will make the rank list and send it to faculty.

I had just one query that after the interview is done do they send accept/reject result or to only them who have been selected , because its like 21 days around i have not heard anything from NTNU or professor.Does it mean my chances are very feeble!!

I know its tough to answer but still based on your experience what do u say?? and by what day should i expect since the classes were to satrt by 17 august 2016.

are there any website where they announce result??

    Hi Jeevith,
I’m interested in knowing about getting a PR in Norway after studying there. I already got admission to NTNU for Masters in Marine Coastal Development and hoping to come in August. I heard it’s possible to apply for PR when doing a PhD in Norway since PhD candidates are considered as employees not students. So, applying for PR together with test passes in Level 1 & 2 of Norsk course is ok for obtaining a PR? What do you think? Is this procedure effective towards obtaining a PR in Norway? Your advice might be helpful for me towards planning for a longer stay in Norway.

    • jeet says:

hey! hi congrats man, i too have got selected for PhD , when was your result declared? i too have the same query , but in my case i m actually getting a work permit as they pay salary.

      • Congratulations Jeet!
Yes, since the PhD contract is for a minimum of 3 years if you are able to meet other requirements, you can apply for PR. When are you joining the marine department?

    • Hi Naveen, Yes, that is true. You can apply for PR after 3 years of full time work in Norway. Since PhD students are employees of universities, it is possible to apply for PR by the end of three years. There has been talks that the 3 years will be extended to 5 years (which is requirement in other EEA nations). Until now, Norway has not passed this law and it will not apply to people who already have work permits in Norway. You have to clear a second level exam in Norwegian and is one of the main requirements other than the period of stay. You can read more about PR here https://www.udi.no/en/word-definitions/calculating-the-residence-period-for-permanent-residence-permits/.

      Good luck.

        hi jeevith,

First of all thank u man for such a informative blog, really commendable and you are doing great on the blog!!

i will be joining department in late part of august this year.I have some questions.

1.when does the summer holidays start in NTNU?
2.I have been working full time in L&T, now i have applied for quitting the company, but u know right the tantrums of company, sometime they relieve u very late, so can i apply for work permit irrespective of that? I hope embassy wont have any problem.

      • I am happy that it helps people who need the information 🙂

        1. The summer holidays start in early July and ends early August.

        2. I advice you resign soon to ensure you do everything by the book. Visa application should be easy to finish and if you give proper documentation, it should not take much time. Work permits are usually issued sooner than other visas in Norway.

All embassy wants to know is that the supporting documents are valid.

I am sure you will enjoy your stay in Trondheim.

Hi sir I am Gowtham R from Tamilnadu, India. I did B.E Civil Engineering. I received admission offers from two Universities, one is Nordic Masters in Maritime Engineering-ocean structures track-double degree programme offered by Aalto(year1), NTNU(year2) and Ms offshore technology at University of Stavanger. I want to know which of these universities/degrees(Aalto-NTNU or Stavanger) are well reputed in the offshore domain interms of job and research around the world. I came across your profile so I need your suggestion for selecting them. Requesting you to consider this message and reply me.

    • Hey Gowtham,

Both universities are good choices. However, the Nordic masters sounds like a better choice, since you get to experience two different education systems in Norway and Finland.

NTNU is without doubt highly reputed in Norway and same is true for Aalto university in Finland. Both universities offer very good possibility for further research studies. NTNU is leading institution with respect to number of graduates and alumni in currently working in the offshore industry. Every 6/10 graduate in oil and gas companies studied in NTNU. That is a lot of people.

Stavanger University is well known for the offshore program with three different specializations. However, currently, oil and gas sector in Norway is in a very bad shape. It will take atleast a couple of years before opportunities increase in terms of jobs in the offshore sector.

Looking at your option, NTNU-Aalto combination looks better choice than Stavanger.

You have to decide for yourself. I wish you good luck with your future 🙂

    Hi Jeevith,
I applied for student visa to Norway to study a Masters degree at NTNU. I submitted all documents to the local visa application center on June 1st this year (on-line application was already sent to the UDI before that). I got an e-mail from UDI that they received my application for residence permit on June 14th. Then the following day (June 15th) I got another email from UDI that I have been granted a residence permit to Norway and that the local embassy will contact me later to issue the visa. From the day I got that email until now I didn’t get any information from the local embassy regarding issuing of my visa. So I wish to know that will the UDI decide about granting the permit the following day itself after receiving my application? Also, approximately how long will it take to obtain the visa? According to your experience did you get such an email from UDI prior to getting the visa from your local embassy? How long did it take for you to get your visa for masters study? Knowing the time period I have to wait until I get the visa on my hand is crucial for me to decide about booking the flight. So, please reply me.

    Hi Jeevith,
I want to ask you about Norsk course for foreigners at NTNU. I am interested in following the level 1 course together with my masters. But I think my Masters lecture schedule will clash with the language course classes. So, I wish to know whether you followed the language course during your masters or during PhD?

    • I would recommend learning Norwegian as soon as possible. It opens a lot of opportunities. If the Norsk course clashes, you can ask the Norwegian teacher if there is a way to get another slot during the week. (Exchanging the batch)
